Barley juice: A remedy to detoxify the body

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most important cereal crop plants belonging to family Poaceae. The genus Hordeum includes approximately thirty species that are indigenous to four continents. Barley serves as a substrate for the production of alcoholic beverages, in particular beer. Barley is a nutritionally rich cereal because it has a high carbohydrate concentration; moderate protein content, high dietary fiber content especially β-glucan and it is a good source of phosphorus and potassium. In common language, it is known by the name “Jau ka sattu” sattu is a urdu word which means powdered barley. The barley is roasted, powdered and then mixed with water to make it palatable. It is an excellent remedy for the summer season. It is easily digestible and has tremendous role in the resistance potential against diseases. The regular intake of barley juice excretes the toxins from the body and the intestines through the urinary tract. This process is mainly triggered by a group of sugars called β-glucans which are present in the cell walls of barley. It is therefore helpful in cleansing the internal system of the body. Barley also contains trace elements like zinc, selenium and copper which imparts a major contribution in detoxification. It also supports the metabolic processes and aids in strengthening and detoxifying the liver. It is also helpful in eradicating the accumulated harmful heavy metals including lead which may be the cause of many behavioral and learning disorders. Barley water acts as a diuretic, it is considered to be a natural remedy for urinary tract infections. Barley juice can also be sprinkled over rice. Barley may also be used as an adjuant in khichdi.
